Ludhiana, March 23

The oath to the newly elected councillors would finally be administered on March 26, nearly a month after the MC elections.

Divisional Commissioner, Patiala, would administer the oath to the 95 councillors of the MC’s sixth house at 11 am at the meeting hall of the MC’s Zone-A (headquarters) office, near Mata Rani Chowk.

Following the oath ceremony, mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor would be elected. According to information, the entry of media has been banned inside the meeting hall, where the oath-taking would take place.

MC Commissioner Jaskiran Singh has appointed Joint Commissioner Kulpreet Singh to show live coverage of the oath ceremony on TV screen to the media.

Besides, Additional Commissioner MC, Sanyam Aggarwal, has been appointed the overall in-charge of the police wing for the ceremony, while he would also look after the seating arrangement of the councillors.

Joint Commissioner Satwant Singh would look after the arrangements for the entry of councillors and VIPs to the meeting hall, as per the orders issued by the MC Commissioner. Notably, MC elections were held on February 24, while the results were announced on February 27. Earlier, some councillors had expressed unhappiness, as the oath ceremony was getting delayed.

The Congress swept the civic body polls after winning 62 out of 95 seats. Besides, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won 11 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 10, Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) 7, while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won only 1 seat.

The Congress party is yet to decide the name of the mayor. The names of senior councillors of the Congress are being discussed over the post, but there is no confirmation as to who would be the city’s sixth mayor.
