Ludhiana, June 23
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has condemned the statement of Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu that waiving farmers’ loan has become a fashion.
This was a reflection of the anti-farmer mindset of the RSS-patronised BJP government, said city-based CPI leaders. “The government is not concerned about Rs 7 lakh crore which have not been repaid by the corporate sectors to banks,” said Dr Arun Mitra, district CPI Assistant Secretary. “No wonder, the government is totally apathetic towards farmer suicides due to economic crisis,” he said.
A statement issued by Com Kartar Singh Bowani, district CPI Secretary; Assistant Secretaries Arun Mitra and DP Maur, and city Assistant Secretary Gurnam Sidhu, said the government should take steps to ensure proper MSP for all agricultural products. The leaders urged the government to implement comprehensive insurance scheme for the farmers. A high-powered joint parliamentary committee should be formed to discuss and suggest the remedy for crises in agriculture, they said. —TNS
