Training in microbiology, molecular biology concludes

LUDHIANA: A one-month training programme on ‘Microbiological and Molecular Biological Techniques’ for students of biotechnology and other related fields from other universities was organised by the Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

A one-month training programme on ‘Microbiological and Molecular Biological Techniques’ for students of biotechnology and other related fields from other universities was organised by the Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

Dr TS Rai, Professor-cum-Head of Veterinary Microbiology, said as many as 29 students from various institutes, including Baba Farid College, Deon (Bathinda) affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Guru Gobind Singh College of PU Chandigarh, participated in the programme.

Students were given hands-on training on various conventional and molecular techniques used in microbiological diagnosis. During their stay at the university, Ludhiana, they learnt the basic techniques such as staining, isolation of microorganisms, their characterisation by biochemical tests, immunological tests such as HI, AGPT, SDS-PAGE and western blotting and other molecular tests.

Dr Rai said these courses would help students to broaden their vision on designing of research experiments and increase their research capabilities by learning practically about the functioning of latest equipments and techniques such as PCR, quantitative PCR or real time PCR. He said this was a good platform to interact with the students and faculty of the host institute too. The students learnt practically about various conventional and molecular techniques such as immunological and biochemical tests as well as molecular tests used in diagnosis of various bacterial viral and fungal diseases.

While giving away the certificates to the participants, Dr Rai appreciated the faculty who delivered lectures and practical to the participants and emphasised that such trainings provided good opportunity for the students in updating their scientific knowledge. It also explored the possibility of joint research programmes or to avail research facilities available with them in a way that both the host and collaborating institutes were benefitted.
