The summer season is an invitation to diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya. If little care is taken, then one can easily save himself/herself from the vector borne disease.

The first formula to ward off mosquitoes from the house is to plant few plants in and around the house which help in keeping mosquitoes at bay.

Dr Meera, an Ayurvedic expert, said, adopting few measures at home can really help in keeping mosquitoes at bay. “One can plant marigold flowers which will help in keeping mosquitoes away. This plant contains a compound called pyrethrum that is commonly used as a repellent. It is best to place marigold in entrances near your home to avoid mosquitoes from coming in,” she added.

In addition to this, application of essential oils such as citronella can help in warding off mosquitoes. Repeat application after three to four hours helps in keeping mosquitoes away. “Some people dip the cloth in citronella or lavender oil and hang it outside the window. Mosquitoes do not like the strong smell of these oils and do not enter inside the room,” said an attendant at a shop which sells aromatic and essential oils.

He further added that lemongrass has a citrusy scent that these insects hate. “By simply placing crushed lemongrass leaves in window sills it will shoo away mosquitoes from entering your house,” he said.
