Additional Sessions Judge Jatinder Pal Singh Khurmi has dismissed the anticipatory bail applications filed by Umesh Gupta and his father Bharat Bhushan, both residents of Club Road, in a cheating case of Rs 52,50,000.

A case was registered against the duo on the complaint of Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Sukhmani Enclave, at the PAU police station on March 23, 2018. The complainant stated to the police that his daughter Ashita got married with accused Umesh Gupta in November 2016. After the marriage dispute arose between the couple.

The couple reached a compromise in the panchayat for a sum of Rs 62,50,000. As per the settlement, a joint petition for obtaining divorce was filed before a local court.

The accused paid Rs 10 lakh and issued two cheques of Rs 26,25,000 each to the woman. But both the cheques were dishonoured for want of sufficient funds in bank account of the accused.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the accused, they openly proclaimed of having no intention to honour the cheques.

Besides, the husband (Umesh) did not appear before the court to give statement in the divorce case. Resultantly, the divorce petition was dismissed.

In their bail plea, the accused had submitted that the opposite party forcibly entered into their house and made them sign compromise papers. The cheques were obtained from them under pressure, alleged the accused. The court did not accept their plea and rejected their bail applications.
