Junior Punjab c’ship: Sangrur swimmers emerge victorious

LUDHIANA: Sangrur swimmers stamped their authority, securing 166 points to emerge as overall champions (boys and girls) in the 42nd Junior Punjab State Swimming Championship that concluded at the Sports Centre Swimming Pool, Sector 63, in Mohali today.

Sangrur swimmers stamped their authority, securing 166 points to emerge as overall champions (boys and girls) in the 42nd Junior Punjab State Swimming Championship that concluded at the Sports Centre Swimming Pool, Sector 63, in Mohali today.

In the team championship, Ludhiana district swimmers finished as runners-up in the boys as well as girls’ sections in group II (13 to 14 years).

In the girls’ category (group II), Patiala district accumulated 107 points to clinch the title, while Ludhiana with 63 points secured the second position and in the group I (15 to 17 years), Sangrur got 58 points to win the title. They were closely followed by Jalandhar with 55 points.

Hosts Mohali won the team championship in the boys’ section in group II (13-14 years) with 43 points and Ludhiana scored 42 points to finish as runner-up in the group I, Jalandhar collected 63 points to emerge victorious whereas Sangrur gathered 54 points to finish at second place.

Meanwhile, five more meet records were tumbled today. Suryansh Sharma of Hoshiarpur created a record. He took 20.39:27 seconds to rewrite the record in the gruelling 1,500-metre free-style event. The previous record of 20.53:11 second was set in 2005 by Harinderjit Saini of Sangrur.

In the 50-metre free style (group I), Deepali Attri from Sangrur clocked 0.31:68 seconds to establish a new record to erase the existing record of 0.31:70 sec by Aayushi of Patiala created last year.

Ludhiana girl Bhavjot Kaur rewrote 50-metre free-style record with 0.31:40 seconds. She bettered the last record of 0.31:50 seconds set in 2002 by Sukhmani Ghuman of Ropar.

Bhavjot reset another record as she clocked 0.36:42 seconds to create a new record in 50-metre back-stroke event, putting to shade the previous record of 0.38:05 seconds by Ramneet Kaur of Sangrur.

Aakashdeep Singh of Ludhiana, who had created a record yesterday in 200-metre back-stroke event, added another record against his name. He took 0.30:61 seconds to eclipse the existing record in the 50-metre back stroke. The last record of 0.32:05 seconds was set by Abhinav Dudeja of Amritsar in 2009.

Girls: 50- metre breast stroke (group II): First Chetanya Singla of Patiala, second Kiranjot Kaur of Amritsar and third Gurnoor Kaur of Jalandhar.

Boys: 100-metre back stroke (group I): First Arbaz Khan of Patiala, second Rajwinder Singh of Sangrur and third Gursimranjit Singh of Ferozepur.

Boys: 400-metre free style (group I): First Anmol Jindal of Ludhiana, second Manroop of Mohali and third Dhanjay of Jalandhar.

Girls: 400-metre free style (group I): First Mansi of Jalandhar, second Nandni of Ferozepur and third Sumanpreet Kaur of Bathinda.

Boys: 400-metre free style (group II): Suryansh Sharma of Hoshiarpur, second Ramanuj Jindal of Ferozepur and third Aryan of Mohali.

Girls: 400-metre free style (group II): First Gul Bansal of Patiala, second Sukoon Shergill of Patiala and third Jhanvi Sharma of Jalandhar.
