Ludhiana, March 18

A 50-year-old Kolkata-based trader reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his room in a hotel here on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Amarjit Singh Dhanoa, a resident of Kolkata.

Inspector Birbal, Station House Officer of the Kotwali police station, said the trader committed suicide at Kakkar Hotel located near the Subhani building. His body was found hanging in the hotel room.

The SHO said Amarjit had checked in on March 10. He had reportedly come here for some business purpose.

The hotel staff told the police that the deceased had a daily routine of going out in the morning and returning to hotel in the evening. This morning when the trader did not come out of his room, the hotel staff got suspicious. They went to inquire about him and repeatedly knocked the door, but the trader didn’t respond. Suspecting foul play, the staff informed the police.

When the police arrived at the hotel, they got the hotel room opened. The trader’s body was hanging from the ceiling fan.

The police said the kin of the deceased had been informed and they told the police that Amarjit was reportedly depressed which could have been the reason behind his extreme step.

The SHO said no suicide note was recovered from the spot. Suspecting no foul play in the trader’s death, inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC were initiated.

The police said the family of the deceased were on the way to Ludhiana. Once they arrive here, the exact cause of the extreme step by the trader could be known.
