Man arrested with 4-kg opium

KHANNA: The Khanna district police claimed to have arrested a person near Doraha and recovered 4-kg opium from him. The accused was identified as Sanjay Kumar of Bihar.

The Khanna district police claimed to have arrested a person near Doraha and recovered 4-kg opium from him. The accused was identified as Sanjay Kumar of Bihar. SSP Khanna Navjot Singh Mahal said a police party led by SP(I) RPS Sandhu along with DSP Payal and SHO Doraha laid a naka at T-point on Rampur Road near Doraha. The police spotted a person coming on foot from Rampur side with a hand bag. When he was searched, the police recovered 4-kg opium from him. The accused revealed that he purchased this contraband from Bihar and was about to mix it to add more weight as it was pure. He was planning to sell it in Ludhiana at higher price.

A case under the NDPS Act was registered and the accused was presented in court from where he was sent in police remand for a day.

Mahal said the Khanna police were acting swiftly on drugs and had recovered about 20-kg opium in the last six months. He said last year 111 drug cases were registered and from March 16 till now, this count had risen to 314.

SSP lauds head constable’s role

SSP lauded the role of Doraha police personal, especially Head Constable Surjit Singh, for this seizure. He said Surjit Singh was working very hard and was instrumental in solving about 35 cases under the NDPS Act and some cases involving gangsters as well. The SSP said he has recommended promotion for Surjit Singh as ASI and would be given this rank after approval by higher officials soon.— OC
