A 28-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide at the Sarabha Nagar police station. He has been admitted to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Following the incident, questions are being raised as to why Harpreet took this extreme step in the police custody.

The Sarabha Nagar police on Wednesday registered a case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the IPC against Harpreet Singh. ASI Jaspal Singh, IO, said Harpreet was arrested on the charge of loot and snatching on Monday around 8 pm and attempted suicide around 9 pm.

Harpreet tore the blanket to use it as a rope and tied it with the ventilator’s grill inside the lockup, he said. When the munshi concerned saw the CCTV footage, he immediately rushed towards the lockup to save Harpreet, the ASI said.

Harpeet, who went unconscious, was taken to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, wherein he was undergoing treatment, he said.

Harpreet, who is a resident of Labour Colony, was booked under Section 379-B of the IPC at Sarabha Nagar police station. He was to be interrogated, but tried to end his life, Jaspal said.

The police claimed that Harpreet was earlier booked in a case of kidnapping at Jagroan police station, while a case under the NDPS Act was registered against him at Dugri police station in the past.
