Ludhiana, January 19

Employees associated with the Municipal Employees Sangharsh Committee today staged a protest at the Zone D office of the MC against alleged attacks on the civic body staff. The employees also submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Jaskiran Singh, seeking his support.

The protesting employees sought from the authorities setting up of police posts in all four zones of the MC to stop attacks on them. They also requested the authorities to appoint an advocate to fight cases of the victim employees.

Jasdev Sekhon, president of the union, said the employees were being targeted on the basis of false allegations. A few MC employees were recently thrashed when they went to demolish an illegal construction at Ghumar Mandi, he added. He said a few contractors had staged a protest in Zone D and levelled baseless allegations against employees. Three staff members of the tehbazari wing were allegedly thrashed on Thursday when they raised objections to illegal advertisements displayed on a vehicle, he added.  The Municipal Commissioner assured the employees of all support.   Meanwhile, work at the MC office was affected as the employees had staged a dharna till around 12 noon.
