MC to take help of nambardars to curb illegal construction

To keep a check on illegal constructions in all the 95 Wards of the city, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has planned to ‘fix’ duty of reporting new constructions in each Ward on nambardars (head of safai karamcharis). The MC deploys a nambardar as chief of safai karacmharis in each Ward.

Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu has pinned hope on nambardars to keep a check on undergoing constructions in the city as the MC building branch has failed to do so.

Safai karamcharis of the MC are supposed to visit each street of the respective area as per their routine duty while nambardars record their attendance everyday.

“We are going to fix duty of nambardars to keep a check on new constructions in their respective wards. As they record attendance of safai karamcharis twice a day, they will be given the task to make a report on under construction buildings in each street. These nambardars can keep check on new construction of houses, commercial and other buildings,” said Sandhu.

“After collecting information, they will report to Joint Commissioner Satwant Singh. After checking the report, officials concerned of the MC building branch will be asked to visit the under construction building site to check whether the property owner had got the building plan approved. If no approval has been given, the construction of the building will be stopped at the foundation level,” he added.

“I hope that nambardars will report new constructions and make this plan successful to curb illegal practice in the city,” he said.

According to information, only maps of 1,670 buildings were approved by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation last year. The Mayor hoped that more than 10,000 maps would be approved during 2018-19.

“Thousands of buildings are constructed illegally in the city every year,” said sources. The MC Joint Commissioner, Satwant Singh, said he was working on the plan and would take further decision soon.
