Mother, child jump into Sirhind Canal

A mother allegedly jumped into the Sirhind Canal on Wednesday evening along with her four-year-old daughter. While both of them were taken out from the canal alive, the daughter died as she reached the hospital.

Bindu Sharma (32), a resident of Shimlapuri, along with her daughter Kashish (4), reportedly jumped from Gurthali Pull into the canal. Bindu, a divorcee, was married to Sushil Malhotra of Kapurthala six months ago and Kashish was the daughter from her first husband. She had come to spend her daughter’s vacations at her parent’s house in Shimlapuri.

It was an accident, say onlookers

It was learnt that Bindu took her daughter along and told her parents that she was going back to her in-laws. However, she reached Doraha and jumped into the canal. But the exact reason for the incident is yet to be ascertained as some onlookers said her foot slipped and she fell into the canal.

Doraha SHO Manjeet Singh said it was too early to arrive at any conclusion. “As Bindu Sharma is yet to gain consciousness, her statement has not been recorded. The moment she gains consciousness, her statement shall decide our future course of action,” he added.
