The game of judo demands physical prowess and great mental discipline and techniques that enable a person to lift and throw his/her opponent on the back.

In judo, the objective is to cleanly throw, pin or master the opponent by applying pressure to arm joints or to the neck to cause the opponent to yield.

Prabhsimran Kaur (17), a non-medical student of Class XII, DAV Public School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, has carved a niche for herself in the field of judo. She is the champion for the last five years in the DAV schools’ cluster-level tournaments.

She started taking coaching five years ago under the guidance of school coach Amandeep Singh. She picked up the game instantly and since then has made big strides.

Prabhsimran tasted victory in her maiden competition, when she bagged a gold medal in the below 52-kg weight category in the Ludhiana District Judo Tournament. This fetched her a place in the district team for the Punjab State Judo Championship held at Bathinda in 2015, where she justified her selection by clinching another gold medal.

The following year, Prabhsimran repeated her performance in the district championship, but secured a silver medal in the state competition at Jalandhar.

On finishing as the runner-up in the state championship, Prabhsimran was selected to attend the national camp organised by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Delhi. The two-day camp proved handy for her as this enabled her to annex a bronze medal in the National School Games organised by the SGFI at Telengana.

In addition to this, Prabhsimran notched up bronze medal in the DAV National Games at Jalandhar (2017) and Haridwar (2018) to make her presence felt.

Prabhsimran also won a bronze medal in the cadet group in the Open State Judo Championship held at Jalandhar, where she competed in the cadet category.

Prabhsimran practices daily for two hours on the school premises. She aspires to be an engineer and continue with the game, which is a sport as well as a technique of self-defence without the use of weapon and represent the country at the international tournaments.

Principal JK Sidhu lauded Prabhsimran for excelling in academics and sports. She wished her success in life and also appreciated coach Amandeep for his guidance to achieve the desired goal.

There’s no stopping this city-based judoka
