Ludhiana, November 24

Had Shamoun Gill been alive, he would have celebrated his 56th birthday today. The family never imagined they would be hosting a prayer meeting instead of a birthday party on November 24.

Sub-fire Officer Shamoun Gill died while fighting fire in the ill-fated plastic factory building collapse incident on Monday.

“My father would have turned 56 today. I and my sister had all plans fixed for the day. She had even bought a gold ring for him, which she was planning to give him as a surprise,” said Sahil Gill, son of Shamoun.

Shamoun’s daughter Shehnaz Gill, who is pursuing B Sc Nursing, said: “My father had applied for leave for today and we had plans for his birthday. I bought a gold ring for him but destiny had something else in store for us.” The family held a prayer meeting for the departed soul at their house today, where they prayed for the departed soul. Gill was transferred to Ludhiana 3-4 months ago, while his family was living in Amritsar. Gill’s transfer was also due this year.

Son to follow his father’s footsteps

Sahil has also taken training in the Fire Department and plans to join the department as soon as jobs are announced.

On being asked if he had any inhibition after this incident, he said: “No, I am more determined now. My father laid down his life while serving people and I want to follow his footsteps. Risks are involved in every profession and this cannot pull me away from my duty,” Sahil said.

Shamoun’s wife Venus Gill said their life shattered after the incident. “We never expected he will never return from this transfer. We were awaiting his promotion, but God has its own ways and we have to abide by it,” she said in a heavy voice. She works as a head nurse at the Civil Hospital in Amritsar.
