Ludhiana, February 24

The city police have beefed up patrolling at Giaspura to prevent any further clash between the two communities on the occasion of Shivaratri, as several people sustained injuries a few days ago after they clashed.

The police have reportedly also taken into confidence the main leaders of both communities, who were at the forefront during the clash, not to resort to any violence today.

A police official said the patrolling team would conduct round-the-clock patrolling in the area and even enough deployment of cops would remain to prevent any clash. “We will not let anyone challenge the law and order situation in the area now. Strict action will be taken against the person who creates any tension,” he said.

On February 21, members of two communities had clashed and had pelted stones on each other. The clash reportedly started when the youth passed irreligious comments which worsened the situation. Notably, a Shiv temple and Mosque are situated opposite each other. Members of both communities had then also leveled allegation of desecration of religious places.

“Today, we are celebrating Shivratri at that temple and we want the police to stay there overnight to prevent any tension. Residents living in the area are still in panic and fear. They want to celebrate Shivratri peacefully,” a community member said.
