A sapling distribution function was held at Desh Bhagat Chowk, Mandi Gobindgarh. Desh Bhagat University and ‘Hara Punjab Khara Samaj’ organised the event held in collaboration with the Department of Forest and Wild Life Preservation, Punjab, under the ‘Ghar Ghar Hariyali’ movement.

“Our objective is to cover maximum area of Punjab under trees and to create awareness among common people about saving environment,” said Tajinder Kaur, Pro-Chancellor, DBU, who is also the CEO of Hara Punjab Khara Samaj, an NGO working for environmental protection.

University Chancellor Zora Singh inaugurated the saplings distribution and tree-plantation drive and said: “Trees save our environment, conserve water, provide oxygen and improve air quality. So, it’s our duty to plant and protect trees. During the event we distributed around 1,000 saplings having medicinal value such as neem, amla, jamun and tulsi among others and our aim is to distribute 1 lakh saplings all over Punjab.”

Vice-Chancellor Virinder Singh said to protect and save our environment, we have to adopt ‘Green Mantra’, which means not only growing maximum green plants, but also protecting these.

A sweet water post ‘Chhabeel’ was also arranged near the venue which provided respite and relief to commuters. Block Officer Tara Singh, Gurnam Singh from Forest Department, Jagdeep Singh, in-charge Traffic Police, Mandi Gobindgarh were others present on the occasion.
