Sexual harassment of women in public spaces is a common occurrence in the city. Apart from the important role of the district administration and the police in ensuring that the city is a safe place for women, the residents also have a role in making the city women-friendly. Trivialising instances of sexual harassment is as bad as condoning these incidents. Simple measures such as proper lighting in the streets, police patrolling in crime-prone areas, sensitising the police force and official machinery towards the crimes against women can be helpful to start with. Women have an unalienable right to safe public spaces.
