The city police arrested a woman and recovered 6.36 quintal meat, suspected to be beef, from Bharat Nagar Chowk today. The accused, identified as Muslima, a native of Bengal and resident of Abdulapur Basti, was nabbed from the chowk while several of his accomplices, who were all women, managed to flee from the spot.

Bajrang Dal activists were behind the arrest of the accused. “We immediately informed the police and cornered the bus early this morning. One woman was nabbed from the spot while five others managed to give police the slip. We also tried to chase the accused but failed,” they said.

“As many as 17 bag containing beef weighing 6.36 quintal were recovered from the bus,” they added.

Bajrang Dal leaders said a gang was operating in the city, which sold beef to interested clients. “More persons involved can be exposed if the police investigate the matter deeply,” they added.

The police said, “A case under Section 295 A, IPC, and under the Cow Slaughtering Act has been registered against the woman and her accomplices. A sample of the recovered meat will be sent to the forensic lab to confirm whether it is beef or not.”
