The joint meeting of the Sanyukat Kisan Morcha, convened under leadership of the Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta, Ugrahan) chief Joginder Singh Ugrahan, was adjourned without taking a final decision on an action plan for getting their major demands accepted.

However, delegates of all outfits present in the meeting gave their consent for launching a coordinated struggle to get the eight point agenda of the BKU (Ekta, Ugrahan) on the conservation of water implemented. Ugrahan said basic issues on depletion of water table in Punjab and contamination of canal water with hazardous contamination were discussed at length during the meeting.

He said, “Those who hold farmers responsible for depletion of water table have failed to understand that the corporates had brought paddy culture to Punjab for marketing of their products, including farm machinery, fertilisers and pesticides.”

What they are demanding

  • The govt should pass a resolution to reject World Bank’s initiative to handover water resources to corporate houses
  • Higher Budgetary outlay for canal water irrigation
  • Action against industrial houses polluting water bodies
  • Steps to recharge groundwater
  • MSP on 23 crops for changing crop patter to conserve water
  • To reject Dam Safety Act and transfer control of headworks to Punjab Government
  • Amicable settlement of water sharing issue with Haryana
  • Bring changes in agriculture model, cutting use of pesticides
