Swimming/water polo: Ludhiana swimmers bag two gold

Ludhiana, June 8

City-based swimmers bagged two gold, besides four silver and two bronze medals, on the opening day of the 43rd Junior Punjab Swimming and Water Polo Championship for Boys and Girls being held at Sports School Swimming Pool, Jalandhar, on Friday.

Sangrur’s Deepali Attri established a new meet record in the group-I 200-metre back stroke event by clocking 2:54.14 minutes.

Ludhiana district opened its account when Ekamjot Kaur took 6:25.95 minutes to win gold medal in the girls’ group-II 400 metre free style event. In the boys’ group-II, Akashdeep Singh of Ludhiana clinched gold medal in the 200 metre back stroke event with timing of 2:30.00 minutes.

Four silver medals for Ludhiana came through Kriti Arora (group-II) 200 metre back stroke; Sohal Singh Mahal (group-I) 400 metre free style; Ishan Pawar (group-II) 400 metre free style and Kriti Arora (group-II) 400 metre free style events.

Sargunjot Singh of Ludhiana annexed bronze medal in the 200 metre back stroke in boys’ group-II. Anshika Yadav of Ludhiana secured third position in the girls’ group-II in 200 metre back stroke.

Sushil Kumar Rinku, MLA from the Jalandhar (West) constituency declared the championship open.

First day’s results

• Boys’ (group-I) 400-m free style: 1st Suryansh Sharma of Hoshiarpur, 2nd Sohal Singh Mahal of Ludhiana and 3rd Manroop Singh of Mohali.
• Boys’ (group-II) 400-m free style: 1st Anshav Jindal of Ferozepur, 2nd Ishan Pawar of Ludhiana and 3rd Devin Sharma of Jalandhar.
• Boys’ (group-I) 200-m back stroke: 1st Arbaz Khan of Patiala, 2nd Jobanpreet Singh of Sangrur and 3rd Rajwinder Singh of Sangrur.
• Boys’ (group-II) 200-m back stroke: 1st Akashdeep Singh of Ludhiana, 2nd Manmeet Singh of Ferozepur and 3rd Sargunjot Singh of Ludhiana. 
• Boys’ (group-I) 100-m breast stroke: 1st Subhpreet of Sangrur, 2nd Tanmay Das of Jalandhar and 3rd Harsimar Singh of Mohali.
• Girls’ (group-I) 400-m free style: 1st Gul Bansal of Patiala, 2nd Sukoon of Patiala and 3rd Sumanpreet of Jalandhar.
• Girls’ (group-II) 400-m free style: 1st Ekamjot Kaur of Ludhiana, 2nd Kriti of Ludhiana and 3rd Jahnvi of Jalandhar.
• Girls’ (group-I) 200-m back stroke: 1st Deepali Attri of Sangrur, 2nd Gul Bansal of Patiala and 3rd Seerat Kaur Sandhu of Faridkot.
• Girls (group-II) 200-m back stroke: 1st Simranjeet Kaur of Sangrur, 2nd Kriti of Ludhiana and 3rd Anshika Yadav.
