Tension gripped the Rishi Nagar Y Block after a man desecrated holy book ‘gutka sahib’ at gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar in the early Sunday morning. He was, however, nabbed by the people of the area immediately after the incident. The accused was identified as Bhupinder Singh (36), a city resident.

As per information, the incident was reported at around 5.45 am in the morning. “Two women were performing path while holding ‘gutka sahib’. A man suddenly entered the gurdwara, snatched holy book from one of the women and started tearing off and scattering its pages on the gurdwara premises. The women immediately raised an alarm following which the accused was nabbed by the people outside the gurdwara,” said area residents.

Persons, who nabbed the accused, include Manmohan, Harjit and Harjinder Singh. They said, “The moment accused snatched ‘gutka sahib’ from the women performing path, the latter raised an alarm. Their voices were heard on gurdwara’s speakers. We immediately reached outside the gurdwara where the accused was tearing and scattering pages of the holy book, and nabbed him.”

Meanwhile, the kin of the accused said he was mentally upset after he got divorce from his wife in 2013, two years of his marriage. However, the area people said the accused was not mentally upset. Earlier, too, he had an altercation with the gurdwara people on the issue of high volume of speakers, they added.

Sources said entire incident was recorded in the CCTV cameras installed at the gurdwara. The DCP, Ashwani Kapoor, immediately reached the spot along with the police force.
