Ludhiana, September 19

There seems to be no stopping thieves and burglars in the district, as four incidents have taken place within a short span of three days.

In the first case, an electronics shop was burgled in the Subhash Nagar area on the night of Friday. Mohinder Singh, owner of the shop, told the police that when he went to the shop on Saturday morning, he found that around 32 mobile phones, 4 LED television sets, an oven and a home theatre system were missing and the back wall of the shop was broken.

There was a theft at a house in New Janta Nagar. Jasveer Singh, a resident of the area, told the police that an LED, a bracelet, a ring, 25-gram silver and cloth were stolen from his house on Friday. The Jodhewal police have registered a case against unidentified persons under Section 457 (housebreaking by night) and 380 (theft) of the IPC.

On Sunday, there was a burglary at a house in the Kabir Nagar area. Naresh Kumar told the police that he went out with family but when he came back at around 10.30 pm, he found the lock on the gate broken and Rs 70,000 and gold jewellery kept in almirahs missing. The Daba police have registered a case against unidentified persons under Section 457 (housebreaking by night) and 380 (theft) of the IPC.

An incident of burglary was reported from Khasi Kalan village yesterday. Sanpreet Singh told the police that he, along with his brother and sister-in-law, went out. When they returned home at 8.30 pm, they saw that the lock of the gate was broken and Rs 25,000 and some jewellery were missing from their almirahs. The Jamalpur police have registered a case under Section 454 (housebreaking) and 380 (theft) of the IPC.

‘Sense of insecurity’

}Every other day, we hear about theft or burglary in one area or the other in the city. Rather than using cameras for taking reactive and corrective steps, efforts need to be made in the direction of making technology a deterrent to thefts and burglaries. The authorities need to be held accountable if such incidents take place." — Jaspreet Singh, a resident.

"It is difficult for all members of a family to go out together because there is always a sense of insecurity. After theft of cylinders from the front yard of our house, we have become cautious now. Even the cameras installed by the police have not been of much use. The police need to work towards safeguarding the city. The presence of PCR vehicles has to be increased." — Arshdeep Singh, Another resident
