Interruption in agricultural chores following paddy harvesting including handling of stubble has resulted in delaying of cultivation of wheat in the region.

Due to unfriendly weather with untimely showers has further compounded problems for majority of farmers including those who had completed sowing of early varieties.

Kanwal Jit Singh, a resident of Sihar village said a majority of farmers of the area had already started preparation of fields for sowing of early varieties of the wheat before showers. “Unfortunately, a large number of cultivators had completed sowing of seed just prior to unexpected showers,” said Singh. He further said the cost of inputs including seeds and fertilisers has gone waste in such cases.

Paramdeep Singh Deepa of Dehlon said the situation had resulted in disappointment among farmers who had been cultivating land on lease as they would not be able to harness extra crops which they used to take between early sown wheat variety and late sown paddy variety.

Baldev Singh, a farmer of Latala village said only those farmers would be suffering substantial financial loss who had completed the sowing just prior to rains as they will have repeat the whole process after the fields are ready again. “Though harmful for many, the rainturned out to be beneficial for those farmers whose seeds had germinated and erupted seedlings fully,” argued Baldev Singh.

District Committee Member All India Kissan Sabha (Punjab ) Sikandar Singh Jartauli urged the concerned authorities to come to rescue of cultivators of early sown varieties of wheat and guide them in management of chores regarding the preparation of fields and sowing of suitable varieties.
