A few minutes before meeting with the tragedy, the five youngsters were in a very cheerful mood.

They had uploaded a video on Snapchat and were seen dancing and singing. The video, it seems, was shot in the moving car minutes before their car rammed into a tree at Detwal village near Mullapur Dakha, 12 km from here, today.

The accident reportedly occurred around 2 pm. The deceased have been identified as Gourish Verma, son of Vishav Kumar and a resident of Civil Lines, Ludhiana; Saiyam Arora, son of Harinder Kumar, also a resident of Civil Lines; Rishika, daughter of Amit Kumar, a resident of Haibowal and Ishani daughter of Anish of Civil Lines.

One of their friends — Akshit Grover of Old Sabji Mandi sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at the DMC Hospital. His condition is stated to be critical. He sustained fractures on his legs and arms. He also had serious head injuries. They all are aged between 20 and 24.

Both girls were studying at Government College for Girls near Rakh Bagh, while Saiyam was pursuing B.Tech from SRM University, Gaziabad, and Gourish was pursuing B.Tech from RIMT College in Mandi Gobindgarh.

Sources said they had gone for outing since the colleges were closed. When the accident occurred, several friends gathered at the spot to identify the victims. One of their friends showed a video the victims had uploaded on Snapchat which helped the police in identifying them.

Principal of Government College Girls, Mohinder Kaur, when contacted, said she was not sure if the girls who met with the tragedy were students of her college, but she was still checking the records to confirm the development.

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended at the Civil Lines and Haibowal area as residents gathered to share the grief of the respective families.
