Ludhiana: The Political Science Department of Khalsa College for Women (KCW), Civil Lines, organised one day national seminar on “Women Empowerment: Milestones and Challenges” at the college auditorium. The seminar was sponsored by College Development Council, Panjab University Chandigarh. Principal of the college, Dr Mukti Gill, welcomed guests and delegates on the occasion. The SDM, Jagraon, Ram Singh, was the chief guest and social activist, Dr Rachna Sharma, was the guest of honour on the occasion. Assistant Professor-cum-coordinator, Centre for Advanced Study in International Humanitarian Law, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, Dr Sangeeta Taak, presented the key note address in which she highlighted gender discrimination, female foeticide and violence against women. District and Sessions Judge, Ludhiana, was the special invite of the event. TNS

KCW girls shine

Students of Khalsa College for Women (KCW), Civil Lines, brought laurels to the institution by winning prizes in the inter-college competition ‘KSHITIZ-2018’, organized by GNA University, Phagwara, recently. The college team comprising, Sahibpreet Kaur (BSc-III) and Priyanka Gaba (BCA-II) bagged the first prize of Rs 11,000 in the programming contest. The team comprising, Shagun Gupta (BSc biotech-III), Rupika Jain (BCom II) and Meenakshi Arya (BA III) bagged the second prize of 5,100 in the business-quiz. The managing committee of the college and Principal, Dr Mukti Gill, congratulated the students for their achievement. TNS

Extension lecture

An extension lecture on “History development and organisation of yoga” was organised by the Physical Department of SDP College for Women on the college premises. Arjun Tiwari, assistant professor, Department of Yoga, NIS Patiala, was the resource person on the occasion. He was welcomed by Manju Bhashinee, officiating Principal, and Parkash Grewal, head, Physical Department. Tiwari spoke on “History development and organisation of yoga”. He guided students and the college staff with yoga aassans and highlighted the importance of good health. He apprised participants about the adverse effects of stress on human life and how yoga was helpful in it. A trained student of the NIS practically showed assans of yoga on the occasion. The officiating principal honoured the guest at the end of the event. TNS

Writer Harbeer Singh felicitated

The Postgraduate Department of Punjabi of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College in collaboration with BC Punjabi Cultural Foundation, Surrey, Canada, organised an event to honour writer, reporter and historian Harbeer Singh with Preetam Singh Baasi Yaadgaari Award. Sardara Singh Johal, Vice-Chancellor, Central University, Bathinda, was the chief guest on the occasion. Manga Baasi, a representative of BC Punjabi Cultural Foundation, welcomed the writer. While addressing those present on the occasion, Dr Arvinder Singh, college Principal, said that Harbeer Singh was being honoured for his contribution to uplifting and progress of society through his writings. “The power of his pen will always keep this progressive work going,” he added. Jarnail Singh Sekha and Manga Baasi of BC Punjabi Cultural Foundation talked about the foundation and its objectives to support and promote social and cultural activities. tns
