Ludhiana, April 26

Rising mercury puts extreme stress on cattle and as a result, the milk production comes down drastically in summer. In order to address the issue, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) held a seminar.

Dr DS Malik, HoD, Livestock Production Management, GADVASU said, “Due to scorching heat, quantity of milk reduces. One needs a proper shelter, water application, changes in feeding regime, preventive health management etc to minimise the effect of thermal stress. Well ventilated shed with proper standing and resting space must be provided to dairy animals.”

Dr RS Grewal, prof, Department of Animal Nutrition, said that concentrate mixture containing more than 18 per cent digestible protein and 70 per cent energy contents along with palatable, digestible and laxative fodder should be offered.

Dr LD Singla, HoD, Veterinary Parasitology, informed that proper de-worming and vaccination schedule must be followed. said ecto-parasites, whose infestation increases during summer, should be controlled by using suitable acaricidal spray on animals as well as in shed, especially in corners and crevices.
