Water crisis is becoming a stark reality in some places in the world, but people here continue to live in oblivion it seems, being profligate and wasteful in the use of water.

The government is also not taking enough measures to prevent the wastage of water and stop pollution of water resources in the state.

Environmentalists feel concerned about the lack of concern for the reckless pollution and wastage. Dr Amandeep Singh Bains from RBS Roots says the impending water crisis was because of the absence of action against those, who are polluting water resources. Ground water is being polluted by the industry, whereas direct sewers are being released in rivers. Regions that don’t have enough water value it, but it is being wasted here. “Being the only region in Asia that has been named after ‘aab’ (water), as it is our identity and part of our culture, we must be respectful to water and protect and defend our water resources by all means,” Dr Bains said. Religious bodies need to come forward and play a role in stopping pollution of rivers.

Dr Jasdeep Kaur, a resident, who has conducted a study on domestic water consumption in the district, said the wastage of water must be stopped. One way to prevent wastage is that instead of flat rate for water, metering according to proportional rates must be adopted. She said reverse osmosis systems consume more water and the rest of the water gets wasted. This should be banned and sanctioned only where the quality of water is actually bad and not be allowed to be just a household item,” she said.

Moreover, several measures need to be adopted to save water including rainwater harvesting, water conservation and there must be strict fine on the installation of electric motors for water, illegal connections must be curbed to prevent water crisis in future,” she said.

In fact, several cities in the world are on the verge of running out of water, and Cape Town in South Africa might just run out water completely in April after battling severe water crisis. “In fact during the space exploration, what scientists look for is the presence of water to see if life can exist there. But here, we are wasting the most precious and priceless thing called water,” says Ravneet Singh, from EcoSikh.
