Predictable lanes of love

A still from Dildariyaan

Jasmine Singh

“Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.” These were poet Khalil Gibran’s views on love in the book Prophet. And now, director Pankaj Batra has given another definition of love in his film Dildariyaan. Falling in love, failing in love and succeeding in love is no big deal! Well, now if you agree or don’t, is what Dildariyaan is about!

Starring Jassi Gill, Binnu Dhillon, Karamjit Anmol, Gugu Gill and Sagarika Ghatke, Dildariyaan has a good mix of all elements - to begin with it has comedy, laughable one. Two, it has good music, three it is well-directed, four it has proper acting…so what could be a problem area? You know it…somehow you know what will happen next!

Director Pankaj Batra of Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo fame has done a fairly good job, except that he has left many points unexplained. The film gives a feel of Bollywood movie Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya (Salman Khan and Kajol), but Punjabi cinema has not yet reached the phase where direct copies can be made! The story of Dildariyaan is not amazing but it isn’t bad either, what could have been better are the dialogues. In fact, the screenplay this time works in the zip, zap, zoom format, and as a result many scenes remain unexplained!

Moving on to the star cast. Actor-singer Jassi Gill, well, it is now that you can call this good-looking man an actor! If you are his fan and have been a regular visitor to his films, you will note that Dildariyaan brings acting out of Jassi. His comic timing has improved and so has his dialogue delivery. At times you see the impish shades of Salman Khan of Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya in Jassi.

This time the laughing cap is shared by two people Binnu Dhillon and Karamjit Anmol. Binnu as always is loveable and Karamjit Anmol’s punches will leave you in splits. Gugu Gill is given a soft character, so the mellow Oye Gugu Gill becomes slightly difficult to chew, nonetheless good. The Chak De girl Sagarika Ghatge is fair and pretty, wears real Punjabi kinda nice suits, but she lacks expression. Why do pretty faces remind us of Katrina Kaif’s single expression throughout the journey?

And then there is a very interesting character, a small kid, Anmol, who will make you smile from the heart. And not forgetting, the surprise packet, Babbal Rai. His fans don’t mind a snapshot of him in the film! Dildariyaan has lovely music; Hor Na Azmaa is a great track, only the racy, predictable and easy second half has more songs and less explanation, which puts a dent in the film. If only there could be some ‘shiddat’ in this love story, Dildariyaan would have hit every thumping heart.
