‘Peepli Live’ director found guilty of rape

NEW DELHI: Delhi''s Saket court on Saturday held Mahmood Farooqui, the co-director director of the 2010 movie ‘Peepli Live’, guilty of raping a US researcher in 2015.

Delhi's Saket court on Saturday held Mahmood Farooqui, the co-director director of the 2010 movie ‘Peepli Live’, guilty of raping a US researcher in 2015.

The court will hear arguments for his sentence from August 2. Farooqui, who was on bail, was arrested soon after the verdict.

A 30-year-old American researcher from Columbia University who came to India for her thesis claimed a drunk Farooqui had raped her at his house in Sukhdev Vihar in south Delhi on March 28 when she had gone to him for help with her research.

Rape attracts a minimum sentence of seven years and a maximum of a life term.

Delhi Police arrested Farooqui last year after the woman complained.

On June 29, a police filed a charge sheet against the filmmaker. — Agencies
