Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh has suggested that the party high command should delegate more powers to the state leaders, especially to fight regional leaders. “If you have to deal with the regional leadership, you must give powers to the state leaders,” he said in an interview to a news channel.

“The party has to strengthen itself for whatever has happened in the country,” he said in a veiled reference to Congress's debacle in the recent Assembly elections.

Asked if dual power centres (of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi) had harmed the party, he said it was time for the “new generation” to emerge.

“I have worked with Sonia and found her a very good leader. But she is 70. Time has come for the new generation to emerge. Obviously she is tired,” Amarinder said, adding “it will be only fair if she wishes to hand over”. Once given responsibility, “Rahul, like his father Rajiv, will emerge in due course”,  he added. — IANS
