Samrala, February 8

A car with seven passengers, all relatives, fell into the Sirhind canal near Machhiwara early this morning. The Khanna police, with the help of divers, recovered the bodies of two women. Dalvir Singh, who was at the wheel, was reportedly rescued by passersby. He was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Machhiwara.

Dalvir Singh said he lost control of his Alto car near the Garhi bridge while on way back to their native village Shahpur near Ambala after attending a wedding at Ratnana village near Nawanshahr. Those in the car were Dalvir's wife Gurpreet Kaur, their year-old son Kushalveer Singh, his cousin Rajwinder Kaur of Kathua village and her infant son Kamalpreet Singh, his relative Manpreet Kaur of Khurder village and her eight-year-old son Mankeerat.

Rajwinder Kaur's body was found inside the car. Manpreet Kaur's body was retrieved from the canal. The Khanna SSP, Gurpreet Singh Gill, along with the Samrala DSP monitored the search operation. Jagtar Singh, deceased Manpreet's husband, demanded that Dalvir be booked for murder. He alleged that Dalvir, who had strained ties with his wife, had “staged the accident”.

The SSP said they were probing the matter.

In another accident on the Fazilka-Ferozepur highway, 12 persons, most of them teachers, were injured when a Jeep carrying them collided with a harvester.

The Jeep driver tried to overtake a truck and hit the harvester which he failed to spot because of dense fog.
