CBI arrests two EPFO officials under graft charges

NEW DELHI:The CBI today arrested two Enforcement Officers working in the Office of Employees Provident Fund Organisation, Chandigarh for allegedly demanding and accepting an alleged bribe of Rs two lakh from a Mumbai based firm.

The CBI today arrested two Enforcement Officers working in the Office of Employees Provident Fund Organisation, Chandigarh for allegedly demanding and accepting an alleged bribe of Rs two lakh from a Mumbai based firm.

CBI said a case was registered under section 7 of PC Act, 1988 on a complaint.

"The complainant has alleged that he has a contract of advising on labour matters with various private firms including a Mohali(Punjab) based firm. The Enforcement Officers visited the office of Mohali based private firm and served a notice to the said firm directing it to submit certain records for verification," CBI spokesperson said.

She said as the complainant was authorised by the said firm, the above officials allegedly made a phone call to him and allegedly demanded Rs four lakh as a bribe for favouring him in checking the records of firm.

"After negotiation, it was agreed by the accused to accept Rs 2 lakhs as first instalment. CBI laid a trap in which both the Enforcement Officers were caught while demanding and accepting an alleged bribe of Rs two lakh from the complainant. Searches are being conducted today at the office and residential premises of the accused persons. —PTI
