Kolkata, March 27

The CBI, in a communiqué to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, today declined to probe the nun gangrape incident at Ranaghat. Mamata had recently recommended a CBI inquiry in the face of strong criticism from various political parties, organisations and eminent individuals.

She refused to comment on the CBI decision against probing the case. The CID yesterday arrested prime accused Sheikh Selim and Gopal Sarker, both Bangladesh nationals. Both have been remanded in 14-day police custody.

The Chief Minister had expressed satisfaction at the arrest of the two and hoped that the agency would arrest the other culprits soon.
