Ahead of the 2019 General Election, chinks in the Opposition unity on impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra have surfaced on account of dissociation from it by some of its members.

Since the impeachment move was driven by the Congress, the development has invited frowns in the political spectrum with regards its unqualified unequivocal acceptability in the Opposition spectrum.

The TMC, which was at the forefront of all anti-Narendra Modi moves inside Parliament, is not part of the notice submitted to Vice-President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Venkaiah Naidu for the impeachment. The notice has been signed by members of seven political parties, including the Congress.

Congress’ two staunch allies, Lalu Yadav’s RJD and Tamil Nadu-based DMK, too, have distanced themselves from the notice. The TDP, which submitted a notice for no-confidence motion against the government during the recently concluded Budget session on special category status to Andhra Pradesh, and which disturbed proceedings in both Houses, has also kept away.

The TDP had severed ties with the NDA and walked out of it before submitting notice for no-confidence motion. The outbursts of its head and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had raised hopes in the Opposition camp of getting ammunition against the Modi and the BJP-led NDA.

The TRS’ dissociation has raised eyebrows in the Opposition camp. Its head and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had recently flown all the way to Kolkata to meet TMC president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in efforts to build a non-BJP platform.

CPI leader in Rajya Sabha D Raja, who is signatory to the notice, played down DMK members not signing the notice. “It is not a political issue,” Raja said, adding that the DMK had assured to be with the Opposition parties.

With regard TMC’s non-cooperation, he said: “Go and ask the TMC.”

CPM leader in Rajya Sabha T Rangarajan replied in the same vein with regard TMC. “Ask the Congress. Its leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was in touch with the TMC,” he said.
