Mumbai, March 2

After successive crushing defeats in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Congress high command today appointed former MP and AICC secretary Sanjay Nirupam to head the Mumbai unit.

Sanjay Nirupam takes over from Janardhan Chandurkar. Sources say he has been asked to prepare for the local body elections due to be held over the next two years.

Elections to the Mumbai and Thane municipal bodies are considered prestigious. Nirupam, who embarked on high-visibility campaign against increase in electricity prices in Mumbai ahead of the Lok Sabha polls last year, is expected to mobilise the North Indian votes in Mumbai. More than 30 per cent of Mumbai’s population comprises migrants from Northern India.
