New Delhi, October 20

Hit by a massive ATM security breach, leading public and private sector banks have blocked around 32 lakh debit cards to safeguard customers from financial fraud even as the government has sought details of the safety measures needed.

The suspected security breach happened through a malware in the systems of Hitachi Payments Services, which serves the ATM network of Yes Bank. Hitachi provides payment services through ATM services, point of sale services (POS), emerging payments services and banking channel products such as cash recycling ATMs and auto passbook entry machines.

Yes Bank sought to distance itself from the breach and stressed the need for policing service providers in a better way.

While some banks like SBI have recalled around six lakh cards, others like Bank of Baroda, IDBI Bank, Central Bank of India and Andhra Bank have already replaced their debit cards. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Yes Bank have asked customers to change ATM pin numbers.

Card network companies NPCI, MasterCard and Visa had informed various banks about a potential risk to some cards in India owing to a data breach. — TNS/PTI
