The Election Commission, which has started a drive to make fresh lists of around 29 lakh “service voters”, today asked the armed forces, the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home and Foreign Ministry to speed up the work.
Service voters are the troops and officers of the armed forces, the Central armed police forces and Foreign Ministry employees posted at Indian missions aboard.

The full (three-member) Election Commission was at a seminar today to promote enlisting of service voters. The Army with its 13 lakh strength is the single biggest chunk among service voters. The EC requested the armed forces to include “voting education” in their training.
Service voter list will be updated every month, the commission officers said. Till today, 14.5 lakh service voters have applied to be listed. The ECI offers online listing for the service voters. The last date for applying is September 25, the ECI will publish the draft roll on October 4 and the final roll will be out on October 18. — TNS
