New Delhi, October 22

The family members of a 21-year-old man, who was killed after being hit by a rashly driven truck two years ago, have been awarded over Rs 23 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT Presiding Officer Rajeev Bansal directed the New India Assurance Company Ltd, insurer of the offending truck, to pay Rs 23,26,000 to the wife and mother of victim Sukhvinder Singh, who died after he was hit by the truck while riding his motorcycle in 2015.

The tribunal decided the petition in favour of the victim’s family while relying on the FIR, post-mortem report, mechanical inspection report and chargesheet filed by the police against the accused driver for offences under the Indian Penal Code.

According to the petition, on August 8, 2015, at about 2 am, the truck hit Singh’s motorcycle and dragged him for a distance.

People who had gathered at the spot took him to a nearby hospital where he died, it said, adding that following the accident, the driver of the truck tried to flee but was caught near Okhla in south Delhi after being chased by the police.

The victim was a sales executive in a private firm.

During the proceedings, the accused driver and owner of the truck did not file any reply. PTI
