JAMSHEDPUR: Five women were killed and at least 12 others injured when a pick-up van hit a tree and then an electric pole before overturning at a place near Chamta in the early hours today, the police said.

Five women were killed and at least 12 others injured when a pick-up van hit a tree and then an electric pole before overturning at a place near Chamta in the early hours today, the police said.

The passengers, mostly women, were returning home from a fair when the incident occurred near Chamta, located 20 km from here, Superintendent of Police (Rural), Md Arshi said.

Arshi said the driver of the van was drunk and lost control over the vehicle, he said.

The injured were shifted to MGM Hospital here, where the condition of three persons was stated to be serious, he said. — PTI
