Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son and party’s heir apparent Rahul Gandhi returned from their visit abroad Thursday night with the Congress officially confirming that the leaders would soon pave the way for structural changes in the organisation.

“Structural and emphatic issues will be discussed very soon. However, you cannot put a race timer to all these things. Give us some breathing time,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said today when asked if the Gandhis had come back.

The Congress vice-president had left for abroad after attending the swearing-in of Punjab CM Amarinder Singh and had announced that he was going to bring his mother back. Sonia had been abroad for medical reasons.

Asked if the changes to Congress organisation should be expected now, Singhvi said, “We hope and trust the leaders will make the necessary changes now.”

The Congress just lost Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand elections and failed to form a government in Goa and Manipur despite emerging as the single largest party in these two states. The party, however, wrested Punjab from the Akali Dal-BJP combine.

The overall restructuring of the Congress has been awaited for a long time.
