Gill cremated with full state honours

NEW DELHI:The mortal remains of former Punjab Police chief KPS Gill were today consigned to flames after the Punjab Police, Delhi Police and CRPF jointly presented a guard of honour amid heavy crowd comprising his relatives, admirers and members of serving and retired security personnel.

The mortal remains of former Punjab Police chief KPS Gill were today consigned to flames after the Punjab Police, Delhi Police and CRPF jointly presented a guard of honour amid heavy crowd comprising his relatives, admirers and members of serving and retired security personnel.

The Bhog ritual has been scheduled for June 3 (noon) at Constitution Club here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a word of appreciation through National Security Adviser Ajit Kumar Doval on yeomen services rendered by Gill. Doval arrived about an hour before the guard of honour was presented and laid a wreath on the mortal remains.

Top echelons of the Punjab Police, including state DGP Suresh Arora, turned up to pay their last respects to Gill.

Arora said it was for the first time that a combined guard of honour was rendered to a police officer. AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik laid the wreath on Gill’s mortal remains on behalf of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

While Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh was represented by his political secretary Karan Pal Singh, the state government was represented by the Chief Minister’s aide BIS Chahal.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal was represented by Amrik Singh (Director in CM’s Office). Among others who were present to pay homage to Gill included former Punjab DGPs — SS Virk and AP Bhatnagar; former Jammu and Kashmir DGP MN Sharma; former Uttar Pradesh DGP Prakash Singh; former CBI Director PC Sharma; former Indian hockey team captain Dhanraj Pillay; former Union Minister Arun Shourie; and veteran journalist Mark Tully.

As Gill’s son and daughter jointly lit the pyre, the three police forces did the honours as a mark of respect to the man credited with ridding Punjab of terrorism and restoring the state to peace, a police spokesperson said
Punjab DGP Suresh Arora laid the wreath, even as NSA Ajit Doval paid respects on behalf of PM Narendra Modi
