Jind, August 30

At a time when the Central and Haryana governments are rolling out lucrative schemes to improve the gender ratio in the state, the situation is more than just grim in 12 districts.

According to a report of the state health department, Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) has dipped in the first two quarters of 2015 (January-June) as compared to 2014. The districts where the ratio has declined per 1,000 boys are — Ambala (slipped from 902 in 2014 to 888 in 2015), Faridabad (from 890 to 848), Gurgaon (839 to 812), Jind (902 to 862), Kaithal (918 to 893), Karnal (from 896 to 894), Kurukshetra (from 888 to 852), Panchkula (from 914 to 901), Rewari (802 to 796), Panipat (from 895 to 890), Rohtak (from 889 to 848) and Sirsa (from 890 to 877).

Faridabad, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Jind have in fact figured in the “red zone” during the first two quarters as their SRB has gone down by 4,23,641 (40 points), bringing the state’s overall SRB to 869 in June 2015 from 874 in June 2014. Despite several efforts, Health Minister Anil Vij could not be reached for comment and health officials blamed neighbouring states for the dwindling sex ratio.

“With strict measures in place, we have been able to control female foeticide and sex determination in majority of the districts, but since Haryana shares the boundary with Rajasthan, Punjab, New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, people here are availing of the services of ultrasound centres in other states,” an official said on the condition of anonymity.

The official said: “Sixty-one FIRs have been registered under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 25 ultrasound centres have been sealed and around 10 interstate raids have been carried out in the recent past.  We have been able to control sex determination and female foeticide to a great extent in Haryana. But still some doctors of other states are creating problems and we are working hard to nab them.”

However, Mewat showed maximum improvement with 929 SRB this year against the last year’s 918, followed by Fatehabad (904 against last year’s 874) and Bhiwani (873 against 832). Jind Civil Surgeon Deepa Jakhar said: “We are taking all required steps to improve the number of girls. We have sealed two ultrasound centres and three medical stores. Things have started improving.”
