Karnal, October 9

Transporters in Haryana have opposed the Supreme Court’s move to accept a PIL litigation to impose environmental charges on commercial vehicles entering Delhi from Haryana and other states.

They said the new charges would have huge financial repercussions on them and subject them to harassment from various agencies. The transporters said they would soon decide the future course of action in this regard.

Karnal Truck Operators Union president PS Bedi said the transporters had already been suffering financially after the ban on plying of over 10-year-old diesel vehicles instead of 15, heavy toll taxes and others.

Bedi said since the old diesel vehicles could not enter the national capital, there was no need of green charges. He said it would be an extra burden on the transporters, whose vehicles have already fulfilled all the anti-emission criteria.

Public Carrier Truck Union, Panipat, president, Dharmbir Malik several transporters had opted out of business due to the government’s earlier decision. The new green charge would not be acceptable to them, he said.

Truckers to appeal in SC

Chandigarh: All-India Transport Congress’ former president Charan Singh Lohara said his organisation would appeal to the apex court to give a hearing to truckers before taking any decision. He said the vehicles carrying certificate testifying that their emission levels were within limits should not be subjected to the green charge.
