New Delhi, July 29

India today reiterated its commitment to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Myanmar in all areas, including defence and security. New Delhi’s promise came in response to the Yangoon expressing interest in deepening security and defence engagement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed India’s views to Senior General U Min Aungh Hilang, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services, who called on him here. The visit assumes significance as it happens close on the heels of a military strike in Mynamar last month by Indian forces cracking down on Naga insurgents.

Last month, Indian troops carried a surgical strike inside Myanmar on a Naga insurgent camp in retaliation to the ambush by Naga insurgents suspected to be behind an ambush in Manipur that killed 18 soldiers.

Some bravado talk here by people in position around the time upset Myanmar and the National Security Adviser Ajit Doval went there later to sooth the ruffled feathers. Besides reiterating New Delhi’s commitment, Prime Minister said a strong and prosperous Myanmar was in India’s interest, and expressed India’s support to Myanmar in its endeavours for national development. Describing Myanmar as “India’s gateway to ASEAN”, Modi called for greater connectivity between the two countries and beyond.
