Amruta, wife of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, was trolled by hardline Hindutva elements for participating in an event that promoted charity during the Christmas season.

Amruta had earlier this week posted a message on Twitter posing with children for the “Be Santa” campaign of a radio station. “...collect gifts from people--for poor children, to bring smiles to their faces during this Christmas…Feel the joy--as best way to multiply your happiness is by sharing it with others,” she said in her message.

Within hours, right-wing trolls who had till then harassed opponents of the sangh parivar, took on the Chief Minister’s wife. “Ma’m..you are leading Christian missionaries agenda of converting hapless Hindus and giving them a platform...sad to see @Dev_Fadnavis and @BJP4India to be a mute spectator. Give gifts whatever u wish to kids, why promote Christianity in the garb of Santa and Christmas...,” one troll posted in response.

Another called Amruta a “vulture(s) showing love for the poor so you can convert them”.

Shortly afterwards, Amruta hit back at the trolls. “Love, sharing and empathy have no religion.”

She further added that she was a proud Hindu and was doing her best to unite all Indians. “I’m a proud Hindu & like many, I celebrate every festival in my country….and that doesn’t dilute our love towards our country, religion & humanity. In my capacity as a Proud Hindu Citizen, I will always try to unite & bring in harmony wherever I can....” Amruta replied in her tweet.
