Prime Minister Narendra Modi, batting for equal rights for Muslim women, today said he was all for the abolition of triple talaq. At the same time, he condemned the prevalence of female foeticide among the Hindus.
Launching BJP’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh with his first ‘Maha Parivartan’ rally at Mahoba in Bundelkhand, he said: “Female foeticide is a sin, even if the sinner is a Hindu.”
He claimed the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre had taken several measures to stop this practice. “Now the issue of talaq has come up and we are opposed to it,” he said. He said no society could progress if atrocities on women remained unchecked.
He urged the media not to politicise triple talaq into a Hindu versus Muslim or BJP versus other parties issue. Modi said the Centre, in its submission to the Supreme Court, had clearly stated that there should be no cruelty to women and no discrimination on the basis of religion.
Holding the BSP and the Samajwadi Party responsible for the “backwardness” of a region such as Bundelkhand, that was rich in resources, the PM asked the people to break free of “the SP-BSP cycle” and instead vote for development (read BJP) in the Assembly elections early next year. He promised to turn Uttar Pradesh to “Uttam Pradesh” in 10 years,.
He referred to the Yadav family feud, saying “certain parties only want to save their family”. Not sparing the BSP, he said some parties wanted to grab power “at any cost.”
Later, Modi visited Varanasi. He bestowed the city with various schemes running into several thousand crores. Speaking at a public meeting, he urged the people to dedicate this Diwali to the armed forces by sending them their good wishes.
