Ahead of the Supreme Court taking up the “triple talaq” issue next week, members from the Muslim community, including heads of voluntary organisations, today collectively described the practice (triple talaq) as “un-Islamic” and urged for its immediate scrapping.

They demanded codification of the Muslim law through a statute of Parliament. They, however, expressed concern at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP leaders trying to “politicise” and “communalise” the issue.

Members from the community under the banner of the Indian Muslims for Secular Democracy (IMSD), led by Javed Anand (member of the controversial Sabrang Trust), flayed the Muslim Personal Law Board for rooting for the illegal practice.

The IMSD, which has chapters in Maharashtra and Mumbai, launched its Delhi unit by holding a presser to mark the occasion today. The organisation said: “Triple talaq and halala must be declared unconstitutional.” Anand said the practice had been abandoned in any Muslim countries, including Pakistan.

Supreme Court lawyers and activist Dr Saif Mahmood said, “Triple talaq violates constitutional rights guaranteed to Mulsim women. It is anathema to Islam itself.”
