A Muzaffarnagar court has issued non-bailable warrants against 2013 riot accused and Uttar Pradesh Minister for Sugarcane Development, Sugar Mills and Industrial Development (Independent Charge) Suresh Rana and BJP MLA Sangeet Som.

Following permission from the state to prosecute them, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Madhu Gupta on Friday issued NBWs against former Union Minister and Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha MP Sanjeev Balyan, BJP MLA from Budhana (Muzaffarnagar) Umesh Malik and others in connection with the 2013 communal riots case.

According to the spokesperson of the special investigation team (SIT), all accused have been asked to appear in the court on January 19, 2018.

The SIT had sought permission from the UP Government to prosecute the accused under Section 153A of the IPC for allegedly making hate speeches and it has got the permission.

Rana has been charged with offences under Sections 188 (violating prohibitory orders), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the IPC.

It is alleged that he, along with others, had participated in a Nadala Mador panchayat meeting and violated prohibitory orders and incited violence through speeches on August 30, 2013.

The meeting was held to demand withdrawal of cases registered in connection with August 27 Kawal violence.

On September 7 at the “Bahu-Beti wa Hindu Bachao Mahapanchayat” at Nagla Madod, around 40 politicians and other public figures allegedly made inflammatory speeches triggering riots.
