Gurgaon, December 13

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has decided to conduct an “automobile census” to get a real picture of the number and type of vehicles registered in the National Capital Region (NCR), including Gurgaon. This is being seen as a preliminary step towards curtailing air and noise pollution caused by vehicles.

The tribunal has asked the local authorities to submit details by December 22 about the number of vehicles registered till December 11 in their respective areas. The administration has been asked to submit the list divided in six

categories—private cars, taxis, two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, buses and trucks—and, if possible, list these as petrol or diesel vehicles.

The tribunal will use this information to take decisions as regards controlling air and noise pollution, sources say. Similar instructions have also been issued to Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Bahadurgarh authorities.

“We have been asked to give details about the vehicles registered with our authority till December 11. Other than the six categories, the tribunal also wants these to be classified as petrol-run and diesel-run vehicles. However, it will take us some time to do that. We will soon be submitting our suggestions to curtail pollution,” said Deputy Commissioner TL Satyaprakash.
