The Hyderabad MP and president of Majlis-e Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), Asaduddin Owaisi, today surrendered before the police here in connection with an assault case booked against him. He was later released on bail.
Owaisi, a three-time MP, was involved in a brawl with the Congress leaders during polling for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on February 2. The charge against him was that he led a mob that attacked senior Telangana Congress legislators Mohammed Ali Shabbir and Uttam Kumar Reddy.
The city police had booked a case against Owaisi and his followers and arrested six of them. Returning to the city today after campaigning for his party candidate in Bikapur constituency of Uttar Pradesh for the assembly by-election, Owaisi drove straight to the office of the South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana and surrendered before him.
The MP was later produced before a local court which granted him bail. Owaisi (46) was granted bail on two sureties of Rs 5,000 each. All those arrested in the assault case have also been granted bail.
"After the MP surrendered before the police, he was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for medical examination. Subsequently, he was produced him the Metropolitan Magistrate. The court granted him bail," the DCP said. Following the development, security has been beefed up in the old city areas where MIM has strong presence.
